St. Alban's Episcopal Church

A Brief Sketch of St. Alban’s History

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church was founded in Holy Week,1965 by the merger of St. John’s (a
growing congregation in the Banks area, started around 1884) and Grace Church (an older
congregation in the Wenona area, started around 1885). Grace Church contributed their
building (1910), and St. John’s contributed their pastor to be the building and priest of this new
congregation.

In a few years the need for a parish hall to accommodate the new, larger congregation was
addressed in the 1968 construction of the new parish hall (the area south of the hallway from
Wenona Ave. Parking Lot entrance to the Erie St. Office entrance). The lower level of the older
building was renovated for Sunday school classes and chapel a few years later.
St. Albans has been looking forward and was the first church in this area to admit girls as altar
servers.

As its focus on outreach began to blossom,

  • In 1982, the use of the building was offered to groups supporting people in recovery (AA, NA,
  • etc.), outside youth activities (Scouts), and other support groups and community activities in the
  • succeeding years.
  • In 1989, a columbarium was installed in the baptistry nook of the main worship level as a final
  • resting place for members and families of the congregation.
  • Since the early 1990s St. Alban’s has participated in several food ministries (Bay County
  • Emergency Food Pantry Network, Food of Faith feeding ministries, St. Paul’s, Saginaw feeding ministry, Give Hope food distribution, the Blessings Box, etc.) and supported shelters and ministries to those without shelter through clothing, food and toiletry collections.
  • In 2000, an elevator and outside entrance was installed to accommodate those unable to negotiate the stairways into the worship area and lower level.
  • In 2012, St. Alban’s started a Reading Camp week in the summer to help elementary school-agers increase their reading skills.

Each generation has endeavored to renew our outreach as times, needs and opportunities
change, working to make God’s love visible and real for our neighbors, and to renew our
buildings and grounds to help us address these times more suitably.

We invite others to join us as we seek to follow Jesus and embrace life with the God of Love!
